Nobel Peace Prize for two (by Giancarlo Sina)

"Although it was fairly predictable, the award of the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize to Nelson Mandela, the charismatic leader of the African National Congress (ANC), and to F.W. de Klerk, the South African President who courageously initiated and continues to remain at the forefront of the dismantlement of the apartheid system within his own country, is particularly encouraging news, received with obvious satisfaction. In South Africa itself, people are pleased that through this gesture, international public opinion has demonstrated its interest and concern in what goes on in South Africa as well as its support of the current revitalization led by the country's two most prominent figures."

"These and many other problems loom great before the new emerging South Africa; their existence would seemingly lead one to be rather pessimistic about an easy birth of the new nation. Beyond what appears to be insurmountable obstacles, however, we do find some glimmers of hope. The first, which the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Mandela and de Klerk only serves to reinforce, is the presence within all political parties and movements both inside and outside of the government, of honest and sincere leaders, capable negotiators and people firmly resolved to pursue the path of reconciliation and peace."
